A resting place for our Youth Initiative.
Every week during our youth initiative summer program, we send groups of young people throughout the city, to explore environments that are unfamiliar to them. Our kitchen provides them with a place to eat, rest, and refresh in between their explorations.

BSM’s Kitchen- By The Numbers
Over the past six years, the little kitchen that could produced a staggering amount of food for the city of Philadelphia with just 4 burners and 1 oven. How staggering? Take a look:
Over 30,000 plates of food have been served at BSM’s monthly No Barriers Dinner, a gathering place for neighbors who would not normally have the opportunity to dine together. Catered by some of Philadelphia’s leading restaurants, No Barriers Dinner is more than just delicious food and live music, it’s also a catalyst for community building.
The kitchen has energized almost 1,400 Youth Initiative participants from around the world (last summer we went international by welcoming a group from Scotland) as they undertake Christian discipleship in an urban context. In addition to volunteering, participants talk with BSM community members and staff facilitate conversations about structural injustice.
BSM’s weekly Breaking Bread lunch has plated up almost 40,000 plates of restaurant quality food every Thursday. In addition to healthy and tasty meals, Breaking Bread connects those experiencing homelessness with vital social services. Thanks to partnerships with agencies across the city, guests have access to: counseling, veteran assistance, clothing closet, medical professionals, government identification assistance, and domestic abuse support services.
Over 50,000 plates of food have been dished up after BSM’s weekly Sunday worship service. The congregation consists of a wide variety of people, including: students, cynics, veterans, young professionals, retirees, those experiencing homelessness, artists, dreamers, and families who gather together after worship for their daily bread.
For the past four winters, BSM’s kitchen produced over 6,000 meals during the 315 Cafe, a program run in conjunction with The Bethesda Project and The City of Philadelphia’s Office of Supportive Housing. The 315 Cafe is an overnight drop-in center for those who are typically understood to be “shelter-resistant”: those dealing with the myriad of obstacles related to mental illness, addiction, and chronic homelessness.
Just imagine what BSM is going to do with a brand new kitchen!
